Below are a series of questions we are asked on a regular basis.
If you still have a query however, please contact us and we will be more than happy to help.
Who are Kinect UK?
Kinect UK and it's affliated schools, are a group of dedicated martial artists,
both men & women, committed to providing a complete, comprehensive and
up to date form of self defence.
What style of martial arts do you teach?
This is a difficult question to answer, without first posing a question of our own; why do you want to learn martial arts? If you want to learn a martial art purely
for the sake of it, or even if you want a black belt to impress your friends, this is not the place for you.
Here at Kinect you will learn proven techniques for self defence, used by
trained professionals including U.S Marshalls and the U.S Marine Corp.
You will be taught extracts of Choi Kwang Do, the fastest growing martial art
in the world, along with ground work, takedowns, knife attack drills and much more.
Won't I get taught that at traditional, well known martial arts?
No. Traditional martial arts usually focus on one area, be it legs, hands,
certain weapons or ground work alone.
Our question is this; What happens if your attacker gets passed your kicks, or
rushes you and takes you to the ground? What happens if he pulls a knife
or a baseball bat?
One Grandmaster has been quoted as saying, "If you get taken to the ground - bite them!"
This is unacceptable and dangerous.
Also, traditional martial arts are simply that, traditional. They have not adapted
or evolved to counter todays criminals. Whilst they look very impressive, for
actual street attacks, they are ineffectual.
Do I have to fight in competitions to progress?
Absolutely not. Again this is an outdated concept. In what way does fighting against fellow students or sustaining injuries during competitions help? This is detremental to ones self esteem and damaging to a child's confidence.
At Kinect, to progress through the belt ranks, a student merely needs to demonstrate their understanding of the drills and proficiency in the excecution of them. This is done in front of their Chief Instructor, at a bi-monthly
grading/testing.
Is there a chance of sustaining an injury during class?
Obviously there is a slight possibility of injury, as you are learning self defence
and taking part in physical activity. However, here at Kinect we do everything we can to minimise this.
All our drills are carried out using shields and focus mitts and under strict
supervision.
How quickly can I become a black belt?
This depends entirely upon your commitment during and after class. With
regular attendance and practise at home, it can take anything up to 3 years.
Are there other benefits of training?
It is a proven fact that regular, cardio vascular exercise increases ones life expectancy. Most people however, find attending a gym boring and uninspiring.
One of the many benefits of training at Kinect is the encouragement you will receive from your Instructor's.
Many of our students have stated that it is "like having your
own personal trainer. Mr Charnock encourages you to push yourself as far as you can and more often than not, further than you thought possible!".
With child obesity on the rise in the UK, our Little Ninja programme contains
fun, exciting drills that children want to take part in. We also use games as an exercising / teaching tool to great effect.
Do I have to sign a contract to join?
No. Here at Kinect we gain students by referral and word of mouth. No student is tied into a binding contract and can leave at any time with NO penalty.
How much does it cost to join?
We realise starting a new sport can be very expensive.
We have therefore introduced various different price plans to suit every
individual. We provide discounts for shift workers and families, the more
members, the bigger the discount.
To find out more, please contact us.
I have never done martial arts before, is that a problem?
Having some experience in Martial arts is obviously a benefit.
However, everyone has to start at white belt.
We have a large range of
students from white all the way to EE Dan (2nd degree black belt). Wherever possible, you will be placed with a partner at roughly the same level,
if not then with an Assistant. You won't be thrown in at the deep end and made to carry out drills with a black belt. The speed at which you
progress depends entirely upon you.
